Procedure
A mixture of 4-cyanopyridine (12.5 g; 0.12 mol) and 1,4-dibromobutane (13 g; 0.06 mol) in dimethylformamide (50 ml) was stirred at 60° C. for 24 hours, and yellow precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with acetine to give tetramethylenebis(4-cyanopyridinium)dibromide (28.8 g). m.p., 296°-300° C.
