Procedure
N-bromosuccinimide (4.0 g) is slowly added to a solution of 4-bromo-1-chloro-2-hydroxymethyl-benzene (5.0 g) and triphenylphosphine (5.9 g) in tetrahydrofuran (50 mL) chilled to 5° C. After 1 h stirring at ambient temperature the precipitate is filtered off, and the solvent is removed in vacuo. The residue is purified by chromatography on silica gel (cyclohexane/ethyl acetate 50:1).
