Procedure

To a solution of 4-[4-(5,6-dimethoxy-4,7-dioxoindan-2-yl)butoxy]benzoic acid (626 mg), 4-phenylpiperidinehydrochloride (617 mg), 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (598 mg), 1-hydroxybenzotriazole monohydrate (478 mg), triethylamine (1.30 ml), and THF (12 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 6 hr. The reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water, 1N hydrochloric acid, water, saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate, water, and saturated aqueous sodium chloride and dried. The solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate-diethyl ether to yield the entitled compound (482 mg) as crystals.
