Procedure
Anhydrous potassium carbonate (4.7 g) is added to a solution of terephthalaldehydic acid (5.1 g) in anhydrous dimethylformamide (110 ml), and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 10 minutes. Then, methyl iodide (2.5 ml) is added thereto, and the mixture is stirred overnight. Water is added to the reaction mixture, and the whole is extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer is washed with water and saturated brine successively, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue is purified by silica gel column chromatography to give 4.7 g (84%) of methyl 4-formylbenzoate as crystals.
