Procedure

In a flask were charged 3.5 g of (2R,4S)-2-hydroxy-4-methylcaprylic amide synthesized in Step 5, 2.21 g of 3,4-dihydropyran, 50 ml of diethyl ether, and 0.1 g of p-toluenesulfonic acid at room temperature, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was poured into 100 ml of a 1% sodium hydrogencarbonate aqueous solution and extracted with diethyl ether. The extract was washed with water and concentrated to obtain 6.6 g of a crude product, which was then purified by silica gel column chromatography to obtain 3.5 g (67.4%) of the titled compound.
