Procedure
The compound of Example 9 (1.13 g), methyl 4-hydroxy-3-propylphenylacetate (800 mg) and sodium hydride (59%, 320 mg) in dry toluene (50 ml) were stirred at room temperature under nitrogen for 30 minutes in an ultrasonic bath. 15-Crown-5 (about 1.5 ml) was added slowly until hydrogen evolution ceased. The reaction mixture was then heated at 110° for 15 minutes. The reaction was cooled to room temperature and poured into a mixture of ice and 1N HCl. The ice mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel to afford the title compound, m.p. 59°-60°.
