Procedure
1M Solution of tetrabutylammonium fluoride in tetrahydrofuran (0.736 ml) was added to a solution of 5-[3-(t-butyldiphenylsilyloxy)propyl]-4-phenyl-2(5H)-furanone (280 mg) in tetrahydrofuran (3 ml) and the resulting mixture was stirred at same temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into a mixture of ethyl acetate and 0.5N hydrochloric acid. The organic layer was separated, washed with water and brine successively, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated in vacuo to give 5-(3-hydroxypropyl)-4-phenyl-2(5H)-furanone (96 mg).
