Procedure

To a solution of N-(t-butoxycarbonyl)-2-bromoethylamine (1.0 g) in anhydrous dimethylformamide (15 ml) are added N-methylcyclohexylamine (0.64 ml), anhydrous potassium carbonate (0.9 g) and sodium iodide (2.0 g), and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for three days. Water is added to the reaction mixture, and the whole is extracted with ether. The organic layer is washed with a 10% aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate solution, water and saturated brine successively, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue is purified by silica gel column chromatography to give 0.82 g (72%) of N-(t-butoxycarbonyl)-N′-cyclohexyl-N′-methylethylenediamine as oily matter.
