To a solution of 2,4-dioxopyrimidine (1.0 g) in anhydrous DMF (10 ml) were added benzyl bromoacetate (2.5 g) and potassium carbonate (2.5 g). After stirring at room temperature for 15 hours, the reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed with brine and then dried with magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure. The precipitate was washed with diethyl ether to give phenylmethyl 2-(2,4-dioxo-1,3-dihydropyrimidinyl)acetate (1.4 g) as a colorless solid.
