Procedure

1.79 g (14.6 mmol) of p-hydroxybenzaldehyde are dissolved in absolute DMF (10 ml), and 14.2 g (102.5 mmol) of potassium carbonate and 3.3 g (22.0 mmol) of (R)-(+)-4-chloromethyl-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane are added. The mixture is heated at 150° C. for 24 h. The mixture is then concentrated using a rotary evaporator, and the residue is partitioned between dichloromethane and water. The combined organic phases are extracted with dichloromethane (three times, 20 ml each), washed with sat. sodium chloride solution and dried over magnesium sulphate. After removal of the solvent on a rotary evaporator, the crude product is purified chromatographically on silica gel 60 (mobile phase: cyclohexane/ethyl acetate 5:1).
