Procedure
5 g of crude 4-bromo-2-chlorobenzoyl chloride (from step 1) are dissolved in 120 ml anhydrous THF. 45.6 ml of tributylphosphine is added dropwise at −22° C., and after 20 minutes 141 ml of methyl magnesium bromide is added dropwise and the reaction mixture is stirred for 40 minutes at −22° C. The reaction mixture is poured into 1N aqueous HCl solution and the aqueous layer is extracted with ethyl acetate (3×). The combined organic layers are washed with a saturated solution of sodium chloride, dried over MgSO4 and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The remaining residue is purified by flash chromatography (n-hexane/ethyl acetate, 9/1 (v/v)) to yield the title compound.
