To 2-amino-7-nitrotetralin (2.8 g, 14.5 mmol) in THF (50 ml) and 10% K2CO3 (100 ml) was added benzoyl chloride (1.7 ml, 15.3 mmol). After the addition was complete, the mixture was diluted with water to a volume of 250 ml. The precipitated solids were collected by filtration, washed with water, and dried in vacuo: (4.2 g, 98%), m.p. 194°-198° C.
