Procedure

Dissolve 3-[(p-fluorophenacyl)methylamino]-2-carbethoxy-4,6-dichloroindole (660 mg, 1.61 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (5 mL) and water (5 mL). Add lithium hydroxide (203 mg, 4.8 mmol) and stir for 24 hours at room temperature. Dilute the reaction with water (20 mL) and ethyl acetate (50 mL) and acidify. Separate the layers and dry the organic phase over magnesium sulfate, filter and dilute the filtrate with hexane (100 mL). Recrystallize from this solution to yield the title compound as a white powder (550 mg, 90%).
