Procedure
To a solution of DMF (5.12 g, 70 mmol) in 80 mL of toluene were added 6.85 g of PCl3 (50 mmol). Anhydrous HCl was introduced for 5 min., keeping the temperature around 60° C. Ethyl 2-chloro-2-cyano-5-oxopentanoate (10.42 g, 50 mmol) in 20 mL of toluene was added in 30 minutes. The resulting mixture was stirred for 1 h at 80° C., cooled to room temperature, quenched with water, extracted with toluene, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated and distilled to give 5.5 g of the title compound (59%).
