Procedure
To a solution of DMF (3.22 g, 44 mmol) in 30 mL of toluene were added 6.05 g of PCl3 (44 mmol). Anhydrous HCl was introduced until saturated. Ethyl 2-chloro-2-cyano-5-oxopentanoate (4.5 g, 20 mmol) in 10 mL of toluene was added in 30 minutes. The resulting mixture was stirred for 1 h at 80° C., cooled to room temperature, quenched with water, and extracted with toluene. GLC analysis indicated that the title compound was formed in 87% yield.
