A solution of 6-nitro-2,2,3-trimethyl-4-(2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridin-1-yl)-3,4-dihydro-3-hydroxy-2H-1-benzopyran (3.53 g, 0.0107 mol) in tetrahydrofuran (150 ml) was treated with sodium hydride (80%, 0.32 g). The mixture was heated at reflux for sixteen hours. Water and ethyl acetate were added to the cooled solution and the organic layer separated, dried and evaporated under reduced pressure to afford 1.62 g of 6-nitro-2,2,3-trimethyl-4-(2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridin-1-yl)-2H-1-benzopyran, m.p. 200° C.
