Procedure
Sodium (2.925 g) was dissolved in dry ethanol (380 ml) and the product of step (b) (8 g) was added together with diethyl oxalate (8.7 ml). After 2 hours at reflux, the mixture was cooled and acidified with gaseous HCl, until the suspension was yellow and the pH about 2. The mixture was then refluxed 30 minutes, cooled and evaporated. The residue obtained was washed with dilute sodium bicarbonate solution, dried to give the sub-title compound, 7.8 g from ethanol, mp 183°-4°.
