Procedure

A mixture of 4.5 g (0.0201 mole) of 3-amino-6-methyl-4-(methylamino)quinoline hydrochloride (from Example 32), 9.1 g (0.080 mole) of trifluoroacetic acid and 100 ml of 4 N hydrochloric acid was heated at its reflux temperature for three hours. The solution was cooled and basified with ammonium hydroxide. The precipitate was separated by filtration and washed with water. Recrystallization from isopropanol provided 1,8-dimethyl-2-trifluoromethyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinoline, m.p. 220°-223° C. Analysis: Calculated for C13H10F3N3 : %C, 58.9; %H, 3.8; %N, 15.8; Found: %C, 58.6; %H, 3.7; %N, 16.2.
