The process according to claim 1, wherein 3-isobutyl-cyclohexanone and pyruvic acid are heated in an HCl and acetic acid solution to give 6-isobutyl-3-methyl-2,4,5,6-tetrahydro-benzo[b]-furan-2-one and this product is heated for 4 to 5 hours with pyridine hydrochloride to give p-isobutylhydratropic acid.
