Procedure

A solution of 1.05 g of (RS)-1-(2-azido-propyl)-7-hydroxy-1,4-dihydro-indeno[1,2-b]pyrrole, 0.77 ml of isopropyl bromide and 1.14 g of potassium carbonate in 30 ml of N,N-dimethyl-formamide was heated to 50° for 48 hours. After cooling, the solution was poured into 150 ml of water and extracted twice with 150 ml of ethyl acetate each time. The combined organic phases were washed once with 70 ml of semi-saturated sodium chloride solution, dried over magnesium sulfate and the solution was concentrated in a vacuum. The crude product was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (toluene). 0.35 g (28%) of (RS)-1-(2-azido-propyl)-7-iso-propoxy-1,4-dihydro-indeno[1,2-b]pyrrole was obtained as an orange oil which was used directly in the next reaction.
