Using the procedure of Bergel and Stock as set forth in J. Chem. Soc., 2409-2417 (1954) L-phenylalanine (50 g) was treated with a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid (150 ml), and fuming nitric acid (28 ml) to produce the nitro compound Yield 26.9 g (43%) mp 232°-234° C., [α]D25 =+9.6° (c=1.77, 1N HCl).
