Combine 1-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl)-2-oxopyrrolidine (1.0 g, 3.77 mmol) and tetrahydrofuran (5 mL). Cool to −78° C. using a dry-ice /acetone bath. Add a solution of lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (4.25 mL, 1 M in THF, 4.52 mmol). After 30 minutes, add a solution of benzyl bromide (0.77 g, 4.52 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (1 mL). After the addition of benzyl bromide is complete, warm slowly to ambient temperature. After 15 minutes, add water and extract three times with dichloromethane. Dry the combined organic layers over Na2SO4, filter, and concentrate in vacuo to obtain a residue. Chromatograph the residue on silica gel eluting with 1/1 ethyl acetate/hexane to give the title compound: Rf=0.69 (silica gel, 1/1 ethyl acetate/hexane).
