A solution of 9.2 g of 6-benzyloxy-4-chromanone, dimethylamine hydrochloride and 1.3 g of paraformaldehyde in 100 ml of acetic acid was heated on a steam bath for 5 hours. The volatiles were evaporated in vacuo and the residue was purified on silica gel, eluting with CH2Cl2, to give 3.7 g of product, Rf (CH2Cl2)=0.5. 1H-NMR(CDCl3)delta(ppm): 4.95 (s, 2H), 5.05 (s, 2H), 5.55 (s, 1H), 6.30 (s, 1H), 6.80-7.60 (m, 8H).
