Indole 5-carboxylic acid (0.5 g, 3.1 mmol) was added to a suspension of sodium hydride (0.27 g, 6.8 mmol, 60% oil dispersion) (washed with hexanes) in DMF (20 mL) cooled to 0° C. The reaction was allowed to stir for 1 h and the 4-chloromethyl-2-methyl-quinoline (0.72 g, 3.8 mmol) was added. The reaction was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred overnight. The reaction was neutralized with 1 N HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layer was washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give the 1-[(2-methyl-5,8-dihydro-4-quinolinyl)methyl]-1H-indole-5-carboxylic acid (0.68 g, 69%) as a brown residue, MS (M+H)+=317.
