A mixture of 6-hydroxy-4-oxo-1-propionyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (1.314 g), methyl bromoacetate (1.01 g), and potassium carbonate (0.828 g) in N,N-dimethylformamide (10 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 24 hours, poured into water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (15 g) with chloroform as an eluent to give 6-methoxycarbonylmethoxy-4-oxo-1-propionyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (2.08 g).
