Procedure
1,5 ml of N-methylmorpholine was added, whilst ice-cooling, to a solution of 1.74 g of (2S, 3S)-3-(2- amino-5-phenoxyphenyl)thio-2-hydroxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)propionic acid [prepared as described in step (b) above] and 1,5 g of diphenylphosphorylaZide dissolved in 19 ml of dimethylformamide, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. At the end of this time, ethyl acetate and water were added to the reaction mixture, and the resulting mixture was shaken to mix it thoroughly The ethyl acetate layer was then separated and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the solvent was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure. The crystalline residue was collected by filtration using diethyl ether and diisopropyl ether to afford 0.90 g of the title compound melting at 181-183° C.
