Procedure
To a stirred solution of 1.05 g (3.58 mmol) of trans-2-(2,3,4-trimethoxyphenyl)-cyclohexane-1-carboxamide in 5 mL of THF and 5 mL of CCl4 was added 1.88 g (7.17 mmol) of triphenylphosphine. The mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 2 h. The mixture was diluted with 70 mL of ethyl acetate, washed with 50 mL of 5% aqueous HCl and 50 mL of saturated aqueous NaHCO3, and dried over MgSO4. Removal of the solvent left 2.38 g of a tan solid which was purified by flash chromatography on a column of 30 g of silica gel eluted successively with 100 mL portions of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60% ether in hexanes to afford 0.77 g of trans-1-cyano-2-(2,3,4-trimethoxyphenyl)cyclohexane (Example 42) as a white solid, mp 69°-72° C.
