0.55 g (3.39 mmol) of carbonyldiimidazole is added to a solution of 1 g (3.17 mmol) of γ-oxo-α-(phenylmethyl)-5,6-dihydro-4H-thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-5-butanoic acid in 15 ml of dry tetrahydrofuran. The solution is stirred at room temperature for 1 h and then 0.42 ml (3.8 mmol) of 4-methylpiperazine is added and the solution is stirred at room temperature for 20 h. The mixture is then evaporated to dryness, the residue is dissolved in 50 ml of dichloromethane, and then the solution obtained is washed successively with twice 50 ml of a saturated sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and 20 ml of a saturated sodium chloride solution, dried over sodium sulphate and then evaporated to dryness. After recrystallization from ethanol, 1 g of a white solid is obtained.
