Procedure
A stirred solution of 2-trifluoromethyl-3-cyanopyrrole (1.0 g, 6.2 mmol) in dry tetrahydrofuran is treated with NaH (0.30 g, 7.5 mmol) as a 60% dispersion in mineral oil, under nitrogen, at room temperature. After 20 minutes, the reaction mixture is treated dropwise with a solution of chloromethyl ethyl ether (0.77 g, 8.1 mmol) in dry tetrahydrofuran, stirred vigorously for 3 hours and treated with a mixture of 1N HCI and ethyl acetate. The phases are separated and the organic phase is washed with brine, dried over Mg SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to afford a residue. Flash chromatography of the residue using silica gel and 3.5:1 hexane: ethyl acetate yields the title compound as a pale yellow oil, 0.83 g (61%).
