Procedure
9,10-Dihydro-5,8-dimethoxy-9,10-dioxoanthracene-2-carbonitrile (1.005 g), sodium azide (0.334 g), triethylamine hydrochloride (0.708 g), dimethyl formamide (24 ml) and water (0.5 ml) were heated with stirring to 97° C. for 9 hours then cooled and poured into a mixture of water (210 ml) and 5N HCl (30 ml). The precipitate formed was isolated by filtration, washed with water and then dried in vacuo at 70° C. to give the tetrazole as a solid, m.p. 260°-262° C.
