A mixture of 1,3-dihydro-4-iodo-2H-indol-2-one (404.1 mg, 1.56 mmol) (see Fukuyama et al., supra) and pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde (163.2 mg, 1.72 mmol) (Aldrich) in 2-propanol (6.2 mL) was treated with 2 drops of piperidine. The reaction mixture was heated at reflux for 24 h and then allowed to cool to 23° C., at which time, the reaction mixture was filtered. The solid was washed several times with cold distilled water and then allowed to air dry to provide pure (Z)-1,3-dihydro-4-iodo-3-[(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methylene]-2H-indol-2-one (341.8 mg, 65%) as a yellow solid which was used without further purification.
