To a stirred solution of methyl 2-hydroxy-2-(naphthalen-2-yl)acetate (0.63 g, 1 eq) in dry DMF was added NaH (0.45 g, 4 eq) and methyl iodide (0.74 mL, 4.1 eq). Stirring was then continued for 24 hours. The reaction mixture was then poured into ethyl acetate and washed with H2O. The combined organic fractions were dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield an oil that was purified by column chromatography using ethyl acetate and hexanes to yield an oil (0.358 g, 53%).
