To a solution of 3-(5,6-dihydro-4H-pyrrolo[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-1-yl)-4(1H-indol-3-yl)pyrrole-2,5-dione (100 mg, see Example 1) in anhydrous dimethylformamide (5 ml) was added potassium carbonate (0.5 g) and methyl iodide (0.1 ml). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 48 hours then poured into ethyl acetate (100 ml), washed with water (100 ml), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated to give 3-(5,6-dihydro-4H-pyrrolo[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-1-yl)-4(1-methylindol-3-yl)-1-methylpyrrole-2,5-dione as a red solid (93 mg).
