Procedure

A solution of 6-ethyl-2,2-dimethyl-4H-1,3-dioxin-4-one (10.0 g, 64.0 mmol) in 20 ml of xylene was bubbled with methylamine gas at 110° C. for 3 hrs. After cooling to room temperature, 5.3 ml of 1N HCl aqueous solution was added and the mixture was stirred at r.t. for 2 hrs. The organic layer was separated, the water layer was extracted by Et2O (3×30 ml). The organic layers were combined and dried (Na2SO4). After evaporation of solvent, N-methyl propionylacetamide was obtained as a colorless oil (4.25 g, 51%).
