A mixture of 2-bromomethyl-3-phenoxy-benzoic acid ethyl ester (6.83 g, 0.02 mol), (toluene-4-sulfonylamino)-acetic acid methyl ester (4.97 g, 0.02 mol), sodium iodide (4.59 g, 0.03 mol), potassium carbonate (4.24 g, 0.03 mol), and anhydrous dimethylformamide (50 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 4 h before it was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated and washed with water and brine. Then it was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel with a gradient of ethyl acetate and hexanes to give the title compound as a yellow oil (5.10 g): MS: (+) m/z 497.8 (M+1).
