1.7 g of sodium bicarbonate were added under an inert gas to a stirred mixture of 5.44 g of 7-amino-cephalosporanic acid in 50 ml of water containing 1% of hydroquinone and after dissolution occured, 3 g of potassium thioacetate were added thereto. The mixture was stirred for 3 hours at 60° C. and was then cooled and acidified with acetic acid. The mixture was stirred at room temperature and was vacuum filtered and the product was washed and dried to obtain 4.9 g of 7-amino-3-acetylthiomethyl-ceph-3-eme-4-carboxylic acid.
