Procedure
170 g (1 mole) of p-phenylphenol, 65 g (0.8 mole) of 37% formalin, 10 cc of conc. hydrochloric acid, 1.0 g of oxalic acid dihydrate and 40 cc of water were condensed under water reflux for 10 hours. The reaction mixture was then heated and dehydrated, and heated to 170° C. to complete the reaction. There was obtained a p-phenylphenol/formaldehyde condensate having a softening point of 90° C.
