0.3 g (0.94 mmol) of methyl 2-[2-(4-cyanophenyl)ethyl]quinazoline-7-carboxylate were dissolved in 4.7 mL of 1N lithium hydroxide solution and 4 mL of tetrahydrofuran and stirred for 3 hours at ambient temperature. Then 4.7 mL of 1N hydrochloric acid were added and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes. The product precipitated was suction filtered, washed with water, and dried. Yield: 0.30 g (100% of theory); Rf value: 0.1 (silica gel, ethyl acetate/cyclohexane=1:1).
