To a solution of ethyl 5-(2-methoxyethoxy)-7-[methyl(pyridin-2-ylsulfonyl)amino]-1H-indole-2-carboxylate (5.67 g) in tetrahydrofuran (50 mL) and methanol (25 mL) was added 2M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, and the mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 4 hr. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature, diluted with ethyl acetate, and neutralized with 1M hydrochloric acid. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with saturated brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated. The residue was recrystallized from a mixed solvent of ethyl acetate-hexane to give the title compound (5.30 g, yield 100%) as a white solid. MS: 406 (MH+).
