To a stirred solution of ethyl 6-chloro-7-(4-(4-chloro-2-cyclopropylphenethylcarbamoyl)phenoxy)chroman-4-carboxylate (83 mg; 0.15 mmol) in a mixture of 1.4 mL tetrahydrofuran and 0.7 mL ethanol at ambient temperature was added 0.60 mL of 1M aqueous sodium hydroxide. The resulting slightly cloudy mixture was vigorously stirred at ambient temperature for 1 hour, after which the reaction was determined to be complete by thin layer chromatography (90/10/1 chloroform/methanol/HOAc). The reaction mixture was diluted with 5 mL EtOAc and 2.5 mL of 1M HCl, then transferred to a separatory funnel. After shaking, the organic layer was washed with 2 mL brine, then dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated to give 61 mg of 6-chloro-7-(4-(4-chloro-2-cyclopropylphenethylcarbamoyl)phenoxy)chroman-4-carboxylic acid as a colorless oil.
