Bromomethyl-benzene (424 μl, 3.57 mmol) and K2CO3 (493 mg, 3.57 mmol) were added to a solution of 8-nitro-quinolin-5-ol 563 (566 mg, 2.98 mmol) in DMF (5 ml) and the mixture was heated at 90° C. for 6 h. After cooling, the mixture was diluted with water (25 ml) and the aqueous phase was extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic phases were washed with brine (25 ml), dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound (572 mg, 69%) which was used in the next step without further purification.
