Procedure
To a solution of (2S,5R)-6-(benzyloxy)-7-oxo-1,6-diaza-bicyclo[3.2.1]octane-2-carboxylic acid (1.0 g, 6.0 mmol) in THF (30 mL) was added 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole (1.6 g, 7.2 mmol) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 1 h, then, formohydrazide (1.1 g, 18.1 mmol) was added rapidly at rt. The reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 3 hrs and then diluted with EtOAc (100 mL). The combined organic layer was washed with saturated sodium chloride (10 mL), dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated to afford (2S,5R)-6-(benzyloxy)-N′-formyl-7-oxo-1,6-diaza-bicyclo[3.2.1]octane-2-carbohydrazide (1.6 g), which was used directly in the next step. ESI-MS (EI+, m/z): 319.1 [M+H]+.
