Procedure

NHMDS (2.26 mL, 2.26 mmol) as a solution in THF was added to methyl 6-triphenylphosphonium bromide hexanoate II (1.072 g, 2.38 mmol) in THF (8 mL) at 0° C. under Ar(g). After 15 min, di-pyridin-2-yl-methanone (220 mg, 1.2 mmol) in THF (4 mL) was added; the reaction mixture was stirred for 1 h, and was then allowed to warm to rt. After 20 h stirring, water (15 mL) and EtOAc (15 mL) were added, the phases were separated, and the aqueous phase was extracted with EtOAc (2×10 mL). The organic phases were combined, dried over MgSO4, filtered, and then evaporated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography using CH2Cl2/MeOH (100:0.5 to 100:2) as eluant to furnish III as a colourless oil (155 mg, 44%).
