To a stirred solution of ethyl [4-(2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenyl)piperazin-1-yl](oxo)acetate (Example 81, 0.210 g, 0.63 mmol) in THF (5 mL) stirring at 0° C. was added 1 M lithium hydroxide solution (5 mL, 5 mmol). After 2 h the reaction mixture was acidified with 1 M hydrochloric acid solution and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, and the solvent was evaporated in vacuum to provide [4-(2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenyl)piperazin-1-yl](oxo)acetic acid (0.171 g, 89%) as a white solid.
