A mixture of 26.6 g of 5-chloro-2-(2-pentyl-5-pyridyl)-thiophene, 10 g of Cu2 (CN)2, 120 ml of pyridine and 60 ml of N-methylpyrrolidone is heated at 150° for 2 hours. It is cooled, a solution of 120 g of FeCl3.6 H2O in 600 ml of 20% strength hydrochloric acid is added and the mixture is warmed at 70° C. for 1.5 hours, with stirring, and worked up in the customary manner to give 2-(2-pentyl-5-pyridyl)-thiophene-5-carbonitrile.
