Procedure
A mixture of 40.45 g pheny sulfoxide, 340.42 g of diphenyl ether and 192.20 g of methane sulfonic acid was heated at 100° C. for 68 hours. The disappearance of phenyl sulfoxide was monitored by gas chromatography. Workup substantially according to the method of Example 3 gave 49.24 g of diphenyl-4-phenoxyphenylsulfonium methane sulfonate (54.6 percent yield).
