Procedure

A solution of 4-methoxy-4-(7-methoxyfuro[2,3-c]pyridin-2-yl)piperidine carboxylic acid tert-butyl alcohol (8.59 g) in dry N,N-dimethylformamide (100 ml) was stirred at room temperature under an atmosphere of dry nitrogen. Sodium hydride (60% in oil, 1.18 g) was added portionwise and stirring continued for 30 minutes. Iodomethane (3.07 ml) was added and stirring continued for 80 minutes. The mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (300 ml) and washed with water (4×100 ml) and brine (1×100 ml). The organic extract was dried over magnesium sulphate, filtered and the solvent removed in vacuo to give the title compound (10.19 g) as a pale yellow liquid.
