Procedure

A mixture of 1,2,3,9-tetrahydro-3-[(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]-4H-carbazol-4-one (0.5 g) and 80% sodium hydride dispersion in mineral oil (0.07 g) in dry dimethylformamide (10 ml) was stirred under nitrogen until hydrogen evolution had ceased (ca. 0.5 h). The mixture was cooled to 0° and acetyl chloride (0.18 g) was added. The mixture was stirred at 0° for 1 h, diluted with 8% aqueous sodium bicarbonate (50 ml) and extracted with dichloromethane (2×50 ml). The dried (Na2SO4) extracts were evaporated to give a solid which was purified by flash chromatography (C) to give a solid (0.25 g). Recrystallisation from ethyl acetate-methanol afforded the title compound as crystals (0.12 g) m.p. 173°-175°.
