The mixture of 3-[4-(benzyloxy)phenyl]-6-chloro-1-ethyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-one (1 g), zinc cyanide (2.474 g), 2-dicyclohexylphosphino-2′,6′-dimethoxy-1,1′-biphenyl (0.216 g), Pd2(dba)3 (0.241 g) and DMF (20 mL) was heated at 150° C. for 1 h under microwave irradiation. The solid was removed by filtration, and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, eluted with 0%-50% EtOAc in hexane) to give 3-[4-(benzyloxy)phenyl]-1-ethyl-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine-6-carbonitrile (710 mg) as colorless oil.
