To a solution of ethyl 2-((4,5-dichloro-2-hydroxyphenyl)amino)acetate (2 g, 7.6 mmol) in of 4:1 mixture of tetrahydrofuran and water (30 mL) at room temperature, LiOH.H2O (3.2 g, 76 mmol) were added and the resulting mixture was stirred for 30 min and then acidified with aqueous HCl (1N) to adjust the pH to 3-5. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (40 mL×3). The combined organic layer was washed with brine (40 mL×3), dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford the crude product (2 g) which was used directly in the next step without further purification.
